I'm not a Blogger!
July 5th 2009 05:50
I realise that I am not a blogger and know I never will be one. I'm happy about that because I realise what I am.
I'm a writer. I write short stories, articles and essays. I write historical fiction and humorous short stories, some of which have been scripted.

My Sulphur Crested Cockatoo? I think it's a bloke. He and his cohorts raid the paddocks around us and sit on the rails making fun of us. This one sat just outside the kitchen window on an old tree and demanded scraps.
My Guard Lemur? I love him dearly because he trains the 'teeny-boppers' who read my stuff - to behave, be polite and enjoy reading. He is celibate, you can see it in his eyes.

The Cockatoo is wild, that makes his presence all the more amazing. Eagles, Bears, Moose, Wolverine, Orca's, I've seen and watched them for hours in awe. It'd be a joy to watch a healthy, happy Cockatoo in it's environment.

Where we live we have thousands of white cockatoos and Galahs. Both are pests to the farmer.
Another wonderful flier in our parts is the Wedge-Tailed Eagle - King of the Australians Skies. They fly off the Warrumbungle Ranges in hunting pairs, creating flights of fancy as they ride the currents - .

I'm wondering where you find the time to talk such inconsequentialities with me. I do enjoy the play, but where are we going? We can't do 'birdie' chat forever, you know

I wasn't decrying Blogging as a invaluable occupation, I was only saying it is one of my options as a writer. But I recognise where my skills lay, and that I would write blogs as a writer - not blogs as a blogger.
It's a hobby - albeit a nice hobby, but I'm not going to base my reputation(If I ever get one) on being a little fish in an ocean of blogging.
I am individual, unique to this planet, I know this and I don't need to prove it. Neither do you, my friend.

I am a writer, and a social animal as well. We do have a lot of lovely parrots hereabouts. White cockatoo and Galah being just two species.
Any assistance on how to be a good blogger would be appreciated.
Cheers

As for being a blogger vs a writer, I think blogging is writing. (Although I think I'm probably in the minority with that thought.) I think all types of writing are writing. (Funny thing happened then. As a typist, I often think one word and type another, just because some words automatically come out without me even thinking about them. Anyway, with that last sentence I initially wrote 'all types of writing are typing'. Interesting.)
Anyway, despite my typing error, I do think blogging is writing. I think any activity in which you are writing is writing. But I guess it's how you define writing. If writing is anything where you string words together, then blogging has to be writing. Then again, so does writing a shopping list. But if writing is creating something beautiful or meaningful with your words, then maybe it's not.

As to where are we going: the simple truth is, I like encouraging other writers and to learn from them. Every time someone visits your site, you get points for it, 10 for registered Orblers and 1 for non members ~ these points help draw attention to your blog and builds readership.
As for blogging and formal writing, each has its audience and purpose. I am not a writer, but I have points of view that others find interesting on occasion and by sharing them, I am able to work out internal issues. For me, this is the therapy that keeps me out of clock towers with a long range sling shot.
I am intrigued with your use of crisp, clear language to make your point in a fuzzy world.

We have a pear tree here. Last year it was loaded with ripening fruit one day, the next day our cockatoos stripped it bare.
Wilson, thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.
Nevar, crisp, clear language? I waffle and edit my way around throwing in cliches every chance I get. Bad writing, using cliches

I definitely think you are a blogger---and a writer. It's pretty good when your comments are as interesting as your posts, and yours always are.

I think I'm happier playing with metaphors and expanded conceits than I am with the instant comment and instant blog article.
Its a pity that blog content must be original and unpublished, I'd love to bring across some of my funny stuff from SW just to spread a bit of laughter around the place.
I think you and Kess are running great blogs. Lawrie has taken to blogging like a 'duck to water' and I'm wallowing in the mud, trying to make something interesting and original.
Fiction is so much easier to play with*sigh*
Modified! My Bad, Lis. spelling error corrected!

Every site offers something different. I'm comfortable with a couple of sites at present - and what they offer in the way of networking and opportunity.
Some sites take themselves too seriously - but if you're into blogging for New Scientist - well thats fine too.
All in all - I like to share my passions, my thoughts and express an opiniion with the knowledge that there are others out there too - who (while they may not always agree) have the maturity to at least listen - and not have some contrary, self absorbed - it's all about me type (either real of fictitious).
Whether your writing develops and finds its audience is entirely up to you and the decisions you make.
For what it's worth - I've enjoyed you musings and comments to date here at Orble.

I shall get this blogging sorted out one day. At the moment I'm chucking bits and pieces at the little box to see if they stick.
I miss my plethora of 'smileys' for my comments, though. One of my favourites is this *work* - it comes out as a little man with a placard and a cracking whip. I find they soften my rather tight and clipped language when I comment. Useful for easing tension in some places

Actually you're not! I get these fun pics from two sites -
"Icanhascheezburgers" and an Australian site called "Funny Shit."
I have a page on a writing site where I'm the Director of the Writing Academy. My page is full of these wonderful pics. I've tried to take a more refined, gentle mode - but each time I try, I get 'hate' mail from the kids and, sometimes the parents who oversee their kids on the site.
I am doomed to live a life surrounded by 'Lolcats', 'HotDogs' and 'Cheezburgers'! They even have their own language, "Engrish!"
I just wish I had my wonderful 'smileys' here too. I'm sure you'd borrow them too.
Have fun, Natalina - more for you to 'borrow' soon. You could always get your own, ya know.
*hugs*
Lis.

I haven't even figured out to do those four smileys. So you're ahead of me. Not that I tend to use smileys too often anyway.

They WANT you to help yourself. They provide the codes, everything. You can even make your own, or caption someone else's.
There are 'moar'* for you to borrow on another post
* kitteh speek - "Engrish." from the site
I enjoy the 'smileys' Samaritan, they're useful for softening what may be a tight comment when I'm in a tight corner.
Try these, just take out the space between the symbols

Some people think they're childish, and they may be - but they are good to know. They're also known as 'emoticons' on some sites. We can't read body language over the internet so these can be valuable mood indicators to the reader. They've 'saved my bacon' a few times

I'm not sure if I'll use them. But at least I know what to type in, if I ever want to. And I do use the odd smiley occasionally. So there's a good chance I may want to use some of the others as well.

Natalina's one is this - : o (take out the space
Natalina - we could swamp Nevar with 'smileys' if we tried!
Then there is ALT CODE - - - but that's a whole new ball game and a little more complicated, that's why we have 'smileys'.
